Description
This gopher tortoise was located in the Canaveral National Seashore The gopher tortoise is called that because of its ability to dig large deep burrows and found primarily in Florida. Estimates are less than eight hundred thousand of this species are left and is steeply declining. It is significant to the local ecosystem developing habitat for many other species of animals. The gopher tortoise lives in dry, sandy uplands, such as oak-sandhills, scrub, pine flatwoods and coastal dunes of the southeastern United States.
