Artist's Description

Bridge on the River Kwai, remembered by the epic classic movie filmed in 1957, was loosely based on a true World War II incident, and the real-life character of Lieutenant Colonel Philip Toosey. One of a number of Allied POW's, Toosey was in charge of his men from late 1942 through May 1943 when they were ordered to build two Kwai River bridges in Burma (one of steel, one of wood), to help move Japanese supplies and troops from Bangkok to Rangoon. This eleven span bridge had been dismantled by the Japanese and brought to Tamarkan from Java in 1942. Both bridges were subjected to numerous attacks by Allied aircraft during the period December 1944 to June 1945. The bridges were built and continually repaired using prisoner of war (POW) labour and was completed and operational by early February 1943. The Kwai Yai River was renamed in 1960 and was originally called the Mae Klong River.

I have been exposed to the art world since a child roaming the halls of Art Galleries throughout Europe with my artist/architect father. During my military days in Vietnam I became exposed to photography by doing black and white aerial photography and processing it in my own dark room and taking color slides as well. Not until the age of digital cameras did I reintroduce myself to photography and raising two wonderfully talented sons who were actors and musicians and was able to help them along the way taking photographs for their respective portfolios (several are in my portfolio here).
