Artist's Description

In 1826 construction was completed on Garden Key for a lighthouse and keepers cottage to guide shipping around the reefs of the Dry Tortugas Islands and in 1846 construction was started for a fort as a forward bastion to protect against hostile shipping in the Gulf. The design called for a four-tiered six-sided 1000 heavy-gun fort, with two sides measuring 415 feet, and four sides measuring 564 feet. Fort Jefferson was designed to be a massive gun platform, impervious to assault, and able to destroy any enemy ships foolhardy enough to come within range of its powerful guns. Then during the late 1800s, a federal prison. The fort was active until 1930 and in 1935 was designated a National Monument by FDR and is a part of the Dry Tortugas National Park.
This photo is of upper archways of one interior side of Fort Jefferson in the Florida Keys.

Now that I am retired I chronicle my travels, especially my sailing adventures. I have put in over ten thousand miles covering the whole of the...
