Artist's Description
In 1826 construction was completed on Garden Key for a lighthouse and keepers cottage to guide shipping around the reefs of the Dry Tortugas Islands and in 1846 construction was started for a fort as a forward bastion to protect against hostile shipping in the Gulf. The design called for a four-tiered six-sided 1000 heavy-gun fort, with two sides measuring 415 feet, and four sides measuring 564 feet.
