Artist's Description

In 1826 construction was completed on Garden Key for a lighthouse and keepers cottage to guide shipping around the reefs of the Dry Tortugas Islands and in 1846 construction was started for a fort as a forward bastion to protect against hostile shipping in the Gulf. The design called for a four-tiered six-sided 1000 heavy-gun fort, with two sides measuring 415 feet, and four sides measuring 564 feet. Fort Jefferson was designed to be a massive gun platform, impervious to assault, and able to destroy any enemy ships foolhardy enough to come within range of its powerful guns. The fort was active until 1930 and in 1935 was designated a National Monument by FDR.
